Client Testimonial | Custom Home Build in Isle of Palms, SC
One of our favorite aspects of our job is the opportunity to meet people from a variety of locations and walks of life, many of whom become friends. Our clients come with a mix of past home construction experience; some are exploring the process for the very first time while others have built before or have careers that have placed them into the process.
We recently checked in with a past custom home client who connected with us from Ohio. They were searching for a custom home builder in Isle of Palms while living out of state, and were looking for a partner who had a buttoned up process for keeping them plugged into progress while not being able to be on site frequently. After having built a house prior, our client had a clear vision for what they wanted in a home: a pool for swimming laps and entertaining, a Caribbean island feel incorporated somewhere in the home, and a kitchen that was equal parts functional and beautiful. We partnered with architect Bill Huey and Associates, landscape architect Remark, our Structures | Alair interior design team, and Riverside Design on furnishings to bring our client’s vision to reality.
Check out the video to hear from our client on how they felt about the process and see the finished product!

“ We started coming down here [Charleston, SC] in the early nineties on family vacations. Us and another family for about eight straight years would come down for a week or two, rent a house, and that was the beginning for us realizing that this is a place we could see ourself being sometime in the future full time.
Structures | Alair came to us through really dear friends who had just finished a home and they could not recommend Steve and Structures more.
Because we lived in Ohio, we couldn’t be here [Charleston, SC] every week, which is something that we did in the first house that we built. We were there every day to see the progress, and we couldn’t do that here. So it was so important for us to have a builder that we trusted. I had three or four things that I wanted in this house that were a line in the sand for me.
One was the size of the pool because I swim laps every single day. I love the pool. I love the hot tub. We use it all the time when the kids are here. It just is a wonderful benefit to have. We love this room in particular. We had told the architect at one point in the process that I wanted some kind of an island or Caribbean feel to someplace in the house.
He went to Hawaii on vacation. He was in a tiki bar, and he looked up at the ceiling. He said, that’s the ceiling.
I got my dream kitchen. I loved that kitchen. When we first moved in, I was like a 16-year-old boy with a new car. I’d be polishing my stove and the niche, it’s like nothing I’ve ever seen before. It is, it’s magical. It’s a showpiece.
One of the things for me was the dedicated onsite manager, especially because we were building from afar. Knowing that we had Dave Hargis here and that he was dedicated to our project for the entire time. It was 18 or 19 months of work that had to be done. And again, he was there till basically the CO was given.
I think that’s a very big thing that I would want to stress; they’re [Structures] are going to commit the resources that they need to, to make sure that it goes right from day to day. And Dave was in touch with us all of the time. He didn’t hesitate if there was a problem or a question to text or call us in Ohio and say, this is what’s up. What do you think? What do you want? He’s great.
So, now, after being here for more than five years, it’s exactly what we hoped it would be for us. It’s beautiful, but it’s comfortable. It’s home, it’s cozy, and we love it. We’re really just happy with everything.
I hope I never have to build again because this is my dream home. But if I had to build again, I would definitely use Structures | Alair.”
